Colic is not a disease; it is an unexplained problem of baby crying which occurs usually after 2 weeks of baby born and continues till the age of 5 months. According to the survey, 10-20% of infants are suffering from colic. Male babies are more affected than the female one and probability of colic is high for the first child of the family. This condition arises intermittently but frequently in the late afternoon or evening. Usually baby is crying more than three hours a day, three days in a week and more than three weeks for well-fed and healthy baby.

The common syndromes of colic are:

  • Predictable Crying: Fussing and crying is very common for infants but a baby who has colic often crying certain time and the cry is loud and continuous that turn their faces red than pale.
  • Posture Change: Crying babies may change its posture by arching its back, extending its legs, clenching its fists etc.
  • Burp or Bowel movement: The condition end with burp or a bowel movement. Belch or split up excessively also a sign of relieve.
  • Others: Passing gas, difficulty of passing stool, making a rumbling sound etc also denote the colic condition of a baby.

Medical scientist research on colic for many years but still they can’t define the perfect cause of colic. They just give some possible theories of colic.

  • Large amount of air is Swallowed which trapped in digestive tract and causes bloating and abdominal pain.
  • Intolerance of lactose and other digestive protein.
  • This problem can also occur due to immaturity of digestive system.
  • The different way of feeding and milk formula.
  • Other cause of colic may be overfeeding, lack of sleep, loneliness etc.

Colic is very common experience for the new parents. It is short-lived and minimum risk problem but still people should consult to their physician about this problem.
